Essex Section Notes July 2016

Old trains are an interest to all of us who try to keep old vehicles working and on the road. May club night we were treated to a talk by the Colne Valley Railway director. The railway is based in Great Yeldham and runs steam and early diesel locos over some mile of track. We were told of the history of all the local railways sadly no longer with us in the area, most of them created in the heyday of the railway and torn up in the 1960’s. The Colne Valley railway traffic was at its peek in the 2nd world war serving the many airfields in the area. The upkeep of these locos involves moving very heavy bits of metal around. The Eric Hodkinson memorial trophy run in May was a great success with Ian Johnson taking the honours thanks to Andy Cook who arranged the run.
